A Journey of Strength, Creativity, and Finding Home at Open Door
For nearly four years, Open Door has been home—but the journey that brought Tonia here is one built on resilience, determination, and learning how to keep going even when life gets hard.
Tonia once lived independently, but her health began to decline, leading to two hospitalizations. After a stay in rehab and continued medical challenges, Tonia’s brother and aunt began searching for the right place where she could receive the support she needed.
They explored different options, but many didn’t fit her needs. Then they found Open Door’s Park West Court Apartments. Tonia recognized the name right away—she had been part of one of Open Door’s day programs, Career, Activity, Community, for years. In many ways, it felt like it was coming full circle—going straight from the hospital into a place that would become her new home.
At first, Tonia lived in one of Park West’s apartments with her friend, Barbara, before transitioning to another apartment. Over time, she has worked with many DSPs—Cali, Nikki, Diamond, Brook, and others—and what stands out most is how supportive and kind everyone has been. The people around her have made all the difference.
Life here is not just about support—it’s about opportunity.

Tonia participates in Open Door Stage and Screen, where she gets to do what she loves: acting, dancing, and singing. One of her proudest moments was performing at The Ohio State University in the thesis performance of MFA graduate Zoey November. She has also written a short story called “Miracle Child,” which reflects a lot of her own journey.
Through everything, she has learned patience, kindness, and how to accept help without shutting people out. Tonia learned not to be defensive, but to be open. Most importantly, she learned this: she is a fighter, not a quitter.
She doesn’t say “I can’t.” She tries first. Because that’s how she was raised—to push forward, not give up.
Her goal is simple but powerful: to be the best she can be in singing, acting, dancing, and in life.
If she could share advice with others, it would be this: stay positive. Don’t be hard on yourself. Speak up about your strengths. Be willing to grow. And never stop trying—because giving up won’t take you anywhere, but perseverance will take you further than you ever imagined.
At Open Door, Tonia didn’t just find support—she found space to keep becoming who she was always meant to be.
