The Mirolo Sensory Park: Building a More Inclusive Future

The Mirolo Sensory Park at Open Door Columbus playground illustration.

The Mirolo Sensory Park at Open Door Columbus marks a significant milestone in the journey toward more inclusive, accessible spaces for people with disabilities. This thoughtfully designed park is more than just a recreational area – it’s a dedicated space to serve the needs of the 600+ individuals we support, while also welcoming the broader community. As part of this year’s annual campaign, we are continuing our work in making this park a reality and invite you to be a part of it.

With accessibility to community spaces continues to be a challenge for many people with disabilities, the Mirolo Sensory Park aims to bridge that gap and become a much-needed solution. This inclusive park will provide a safe, therapeutic, and engaging space for individuals of all abilities to come together to play and connect, fostering not only individual well-being but also a sense of community for everyone who visits.

Key Features and Benefits

The Mirolo Sensory Park will feature thirteen unique pieces of equipment specifically designed for accessibility and sensory engagement. Each element of the park has been carefully planned to ensure that it can accommodate people with a wide range of physical and sensory needs, offering a space for everyone to enjoy. Some of the key elements of the park include:

  • Accessible Play Areas: The park will have a variety of accessible equipment, allowing individuals with mobility challenges, sensory sensitivities, and/or other disabilities to play and engage in a safe, supportive environment.
  • Therapeutic Benefits: Many of the park’s features are thoughtfully designed with therapeutic value at their core. By stimulating the senses and enhancing sensory processing, these elements promote both emotional and physical well-being, fostering a sense of overall wellness.
  • Community Engagement: Beyond the physical equipment, the park will foster a sense of community. It will serve as a beautiful and functional space where people of all abilities can come together.
  • Diverse Spaces: The park will include an Accessible Sports Park, an Outdoor Performance Space, and a Shakespearean Garden, providing a variety of spaces for recreation, learning, and enjoyment for all.
How You Can Support the Project

We invite individuals, organizations, and community members to join us in bringing the Mirolo Sensory Park to life. Your support will directly contribute to creating an inclusive space where everyone can thrive. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Make a Donation: Financial contributions, no matter the size, will play a crucial role in the construction and development of the park.
  • Sponsor a Piece of Equipment: For those looking to leave a lasting legacy, equipment sponsorships are available. Sponsors will have naming rights for the specific pieces of equipment they support.
  • Spread the Word: One of the most powerful ways you can help is by sharing this project with your network! By spreading awareness, you’ll help us reach a wider audience and inspire more people to join the effort.

All donations of $250 and above will be honored on our Donor Wall. Equipment sponsors will also receive a commemorative plaque with naming rights for the equipment they support. These acknowledgments will serve as a tribute to the generosity that makes this project possible.
