At Open Door, the heart of our work is the people who make it all possible. Behind every moment of connection, every milestone celebrated, and every opportunity for growth, there is a team whose dedication, skill, and compassion transform lives. This quarter, we celebrate stories that showcase the impact of inclusion—from the inspiring journey of Lee George advocating for Ohio’s IDD community, to Matt Beaver’s path of growth and gratitude, and the construction of the Mirolo Sensory Park, a space where creativity, play, and exploration come alive. We also highlight key achievements from our annual report, reflecting the dedication and progress of our programs, staff, and the communities we serve. Together, these stories remind us that when people lead with heart, purpose becomes impact, and every effort opens doors to independence, joy, and belonging.
Leading Beyond Limits
Celebrating Strength, Resilience, and Impact

Lee George’s journey is a powerful example of turning lived experience into leadership. After navigating barriers and challenging assumptions throughout her life, Lee transformed what others saw as limitations into a platform for advocacy, growth, and meaningful change. With the support of Open Door, she pursued higher education, strengthened her self-advocacy, and developed the skills that propelled her to a seat on the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council. Today, Lee’s voice reaches across Ohio, championing accessibility, equality, and empowerment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her story is a reminder that potential is revealed when opportunity, support, and determination come together—and that one person’s perseverance can inspire change for an entire community.
Lee’s impact continues to grow as she uses her platform not only to advocate, but to mentor and uplift others on similar journeys. By sharing her story, she encourages individuals to find their voice, embrace their strengths, and challenge the limits often placed upon them. Her leadership is rooted in authenticity and resilience, reminding us that true change happens when lived experience is not only heard, but valued. Through every conversation, initiative, and connection she makes, Lee is helping to build a more inclusive future—one where every individual is recognized for their abilities and empowered to lead.

From learning to value others’ perspectives to sharing adventures with friends and family, Matt’s story celebrates the impact of a caring village and the meaningful difference that teamwork, patience, and understanding can make in someone’s life.
As Matt continues to grow, each new experience becomes a stepping stone toward greater confidence and self-discovery. With the continued encouragement of those around him, Matt is not only shaping his own path but also reminding others of the importance of compassion, inclusion, and believing in what’s possible.
The Mirolo Sensory Park at Open Door Columbus
Engaging the Senses, Inspiring Community

The Mirolo Sensory Park at Open Door Columbus is an exciting step toward truly inclusive, accessible community spaces. Designed for the 500+ individuals we support—and welcoming the wider community—the park will feature thirteen unique pieces of accessible, sensory-rich equipment, along with an Accessible Sports Park, Outdoor Performance Space, and Shakespearean Garden. Every element promotes play, connection, and well-being, offering a safe, therapeutic, and engaging space for people of all abilities. You can help bring this vision to life—through donations, equipment sponsorships, or spreading the word—and be part of creating a space where everyone can thrive, connect, and enjoy the outdoors together.
Beyond its physical features, the Mirolo Sensory Park will serve as a gathering place where friendships are formed, confidence is built, and individuals can explore the world in ways that feel comfortable and empowering. It represents more than a park—it’s a commitment to inclusion, dignity, and belonging. As this vision comes to life, it will stand as a lasting reminder that when communities come together with intention and heart, they can create spaces that uplift, inspire, and truly make a difference for generations to come.
