Meet Luisa, whose passion for swimming and supporting others is helping individuals build confidence, independence and new skills—both in and out of the pool.
For Luisa, swimming is about much more than moving through water. It is about developing patience, building independence and experiencing the moment when fear begins to turn into confidence.
Luisa has been part of Open Door for five months, supporting individuals at Inspiration Station as they participate in daily activities, learn new skills and work toward personal goals. Her priority is making sure each person feels safe, respected and included while receiving the support they need to become more independent.
That same commitment follows Luisa into the swimming pool.
Her love of swimming began when she was a young girl. About four years ago, she turned that passion into an opportunity to coach others. She was inspired to teach because she wanted to share her knowledge and help people feel good about themselves.
What she enjoys most is watching someone become more independent in the water—especially the first time they confidently float and begin kicking on their own.
“When they feel confident and are able to float while kicking, that always makes me smile,” Luisa shared.
Recently, Luisa had the opportunity to work with Dani and Chandler in the pool. She introduced them to new skills, including how to kick through the water. The experience was exciting for everyone, but Chandler’s reaction made the day especially memorable. She enjoyed it so much that she immediately wanted to know when she could go swimming again.
Moments like that demonstrate why Luisa considers swimming so valuable. In addition to being great exercise, it encourages coordination, repetition and psychomotor development. Swimmers also learn how to manage their breathing, follow instructions and keep trying when a skill does not come easily.
Most importantly, swimming can open the door to greater confidence and independence.
Luisa understands that no two people learn in exactly the same way. Before teaching a new skill, she takes time to understand each person’s strengths and needs. She then adapts her approach by using simple instructions, demonstrations, repetition and positive reinforcement.
Her work as a coach has strengthened the qualities she brings to Open Door every day. Both roles require discipline, patience, consistency and the ability to recognize progress—even when it happens one small step at a time.
Sometimes, however, that progress is impossible to miss.

Luisa remembers the pride she felt when swimmers surprised her by making it from one side of the pool to the other. For someone who has worked through uncertainty or fear, reaching the other side represents far more than completing a swim. It is proof that patience and practice can lead to something once thought impossible.
“When someone overcomes a fear or masters a new skill, they gain confidence in themselves,” Luisa explained. “They feel proud, and it shows them that they can achieve their goals with patience and practice.”
Seeing that transformation is what motivates Luisa to give her best—both at Open Door and as a coach. She finds purpose in knowing that her encouragement can make a positive difference in someone’s life. Every new skill, proud smile and growing sense of independence inspires her to keep supporting others as they learn and grow.
Her coaching philosophy is simple: be patient, motivating and supportive of every individual.
That support does not end when someone leaves the pool. Luisa hopes the individuals she works with will always see her as someone they can depend on, wherever they may be and whenever they need encouragement.
For Luisa, that is the heart of “Inspiring Life Journeys.”
“It means helping each person discover their strengths, develop their confidence and achieve their goals,” she said. “I hope my work gives them the support and encouragement to try new things, become more independent and be successful.”
Whether she is standing beside someone at Inspiration Station or guiding a swimmer toward the other side of the pool, Luisa is helping people recognize something powerful within themselves: the ability to keep learning, keep growing and make waves of their own.
