Growing Together: Highlights from the CAC Gardening Group

The Open Door AccessABLE Community Garden is made possible in part through the generosity of The Columbus Foundation’s Urban Gardening Grant, provided through the Franklin Park Conservatory, as well as funding from the Little Garden Club of Columbus.

This Spring and Summer, the Open Door AccessABLE Community Garden has blossomed under the care of the Career, Activity, and Community (CAC) Gardening Group, who have achieved remarkable milestones in cultivating both plants and friendships. The season has been a journey of growth, transformation, and community spirit, and we’re excited to share some of the standout moments with you.

A New Beginning

The season started with a change in leadership. Our beloved former Gardening Group Coordinator, Teresa Waits, was unable to join us this year. In her stead, two dedicated CAC Direct Support Professionals, Joyce and Linda, stepped up to lead the group. Under Teresa’s initial guidance, Joyce and Linda, along with the Gardening Group, gathered seeds in early March and kicked off their planting journey in the CAC Nature Room. Their first planting day, March 3rd, was marked by a special celebration featuring music, games, and an enthusiastic planting of green onions.

Preparing for Success

With spring in full swing, the team prepared for the annual Open Door Plant Sale. On May 3rd, a garden cleanup day brought together Open Door administrative staff and the Gardening Group for a thorough sprucing up of the garden. Tasks included weeding, mulching, caring for wooden beds, tilling soil, and installing our irrigation system. This collaborative effort laid a strong foundation for the Gardening Group’s successful season.

The Open Door AccessABLE Community Garden Plant Sale

The Open Door Plant Sale on May 9th was a resounding success. The Gardening Group’s hard work was celebrated with a vibrant array of plants available for every taste and budget. A talented artist, Jackie, from Open Door Art Studio beautifully personalized plant pots, while actors from Open Door Stage and Screen crafted charming garden gnomes. The event showcased the heartwarming spirit of the community and was a testament to the collective effort behind the garden’s success.

Harvest Time and Culinary Delights

May also brought the highly anticipated first harvest. The Gardening Group eagerly gathered an array of greens and herbs, preparing them for the CAC Cooking Class the following day. This experience was particularly special as Gardening Group members participated in the Cooking Class, enjoying the fruits of their labor with a fresh Chef’s Salad made from lettuce, spinach, and a homemade dressing featuring garden thyme and chives.

Throughout June, as the harvest continued to exceed expectations, the Gardening Group decided to share their bounty. They first delivered cucumbers, zucchini, and onions to Open Door Park West, where the produce was warmly received. Inspired by this success, they organized a Monday Garden Market, allowing the entire CAC community to enjoy their fresh produce. This market has become a cherished weekly event, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

Volunteer Support and Community Impact

The AccessABLE Community Garden has also benefited greatly from volunteer support. On May 8th, volunteers from the Franklin Park Conservatory helped with the garden’s initial stages, offering valuable gardening expertise and assisting with planting and repairs. In June, the Westerville Heritage Christian Church Youth Group joined in, making a significant impact with their enthusiasm and hard work. Their contributions ranged from planting vibrant flowers to maintaining the garden.

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, the CAC Gardening Group continues to thrive, supported by a dedicated community of volunteers and staff. Their hard work and passion have not only yielded a bountiful harvest but have also strengthened the bonds within our community.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating the growth and achievements of the CAC Gardening Group. Here’s to more fruitful seasons and the joy of growing together!
