From Barriers to Leadership

Lee George’s Journey to Empowering Voices Across Ohio’s IDD Community

Leadership often begins with lived experience. For Lee George, years of navigating barriers, challenging assumptions, and refusing to be underestimated became the foundation of her powerful voice. What once felt like limitations imposed by others ultimately became fuel for advocacy, growth, and meaningful change.

Lee’s journey reflects both the realities many individuals in Ohio’s intellectual and developmental disabilities community face and the transformative impact of support, opportunity, and self-determination. From confronting systemic obstacles to stepping into statewide leadership, her story is a reminder that potential is not defined by diagnosis — it is revealed through access, belief, and perseverance.

Today, Lee’s voice reaches far beyond her own experience. It represents empowerment, equality, and a clear call to build systems that recognize ability over assumption.

When Lee George learned she had been appointed to the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council, her first reaction was pure shock. After years of facing obstacles, being underestimated, and having decisions made for her instead of with her, the appointment served as both validation of her perseverance and a platform to create meaningful change.

Growing up, Lee often felt confined by systems that failed to recognize her abilities. She was denied participation in certain programs because she was considered “too smart,” yet she simultaneously faced the challenges of navigating a world not designed for people with developmental disabilities. From inaccessible transportation to limited communication within healthcare settings, she experienced firsthand the frustration of living in a world that too often determines what someone can—or cannot—do.

With the support of Open Door, Lee pursued a college education, strengthened her leadership skills, and developed confidence in self-advocacy. She acknowledges the staff who supported her through challenges such as managing ADHD and navigating complex bureaucracies. Still, it was her determination, persistence, and drive that ultimately propelled her success.

Today, as a council member, Lee advocates for improved communication, greater accessibility, and true equality. Her message to lawmakers and community leaders is direct and unwavering: treat individuals with disabilities with the same respect, rights, and opportunities afforded to everyone else. Provide accommodations when necessary—but never underestimate potential.

Her appointment represents more than a personal achievement; it stands as a beacon of possibility for others within the IDD community. Through courage, conviction, and leadership, Lee George is demonstrating that with the right support and opportunity, individuals can lead, inspire, and create lasting change.
