6.06 – Mask Technique

Purpose

To prevent the transmission of microorganisms (germs) through the air.

Equipment

Disposable face mask.

Procedure

  1. Wash hands
  2. Select a mask from container of clean masks
  3. Unfold and place mask over nose and mouth
  4. Place straps behind ears
  5. Masks become ineffective when moist.  Never touch the filtering area of mask.  Remove upon leaving the individual’s area, whenever the mask becomes moist, or every 30-60 minutes when contact with the individual is prolonged.
  6. Touch only the strings in removing the mask – never touch the filter area.  Dispose in plastic lined trash container.  Do not hang mask around neck, re-use or wear outside the individual’s area
  7. Wash hands

The plastic, non-disposable face mask is available while pouring cleaning solutions into the mop bucket to prevent splashing into the eyes.
