A Memorable Day at the 2024 OADSP Recognition Event

Amadou Sow, 2024 OADSP DSP of the Year, receiving award. Event stage with "Amadou Sow" on screen.

On September 11, 2024, Open Door staff had the privilege of attending the Ohio Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (OADSP) 2024 DSP Recognition Event, where we joined over 400 dedicated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) for a day of celebration and inspiration.

The event was a true highlight, featuring a powerful keynote address by Joseph Macbeth, President of the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP), and fantastic performances from three stars of American Idol as part of their “Built-4-More” tour. It was an unforgettable experience honoring the incredible work of DSPs across Ohio.

Adding to the excitement, we were thrilled to see one of our own, Amadou Sow, receive the esteemed 2024 OADSP DSP of the Year Award! Nominated by Open Door SCL resident Chris Melvin, Amadou’s dedication and impact were beautifully captured in a heartfelt video from Chris, showcasing the profound difference Amadou makes in his life.

You can watch Chris’s touching tribute to Amadou below.

In addition to the award and a cash prize, Amadou enjoyed a private catered Meet & Greet luncheon and participated in an interview with David Roustio, host of the OADSP DirectLine Podcast. During their discussion, Amadou shared insights about his work at Open Door and the meaningful relationships he cultivates with those he supports. As nominator Chris Melvin expressed, “Amadou’s title is Direct Support Professional, but it encompasses so much more: male role model, friend, nurse, counselor, taxi driver, housekeeper, event planner, dietitian, personal shopper—the list goes on. Amadou has helped me become a better man. Even when I get upset, he never gives up on me; he just keeps helping me.”

This celebration was not just about recognition, but a reminder of the vital role DSPs play in our communities. We are proud of Amadou and grateful for all the DSPs who tirelessly support and Inspire the Life Journeys of those around them!

Congratulations to Amadou Sow for being awarded the OADSP 2024 DSP of the Year Award!
